STORRS, Conn. - The UConn men's tennis team picked-up a pair of victories on Saturday afternoon, sweeping both Merrimack and Siena by matching scores of 4-0 on the UConn Tennis Courts. The Huskies have now won three-straight matches and improved to 5-18 on the season.
UConn opened the day facing Merrimack and swept the doubles point before closing it out with wins at the #4 through #6 singles spots. Junior Arnaud Valentin (Ridgefield, Conn.) picked up a win in both singles and doubles play.
Valentin teamed with senior Zac McEntee (Yorba Linda, Calif.) to open doubles action with a 6-1 win over Frank Vega and Miguel Belfort. R-Senior Jacob Spreyer (Denver, Colo.) and junior Christopher Toner (South Hamilton, Mass.) closed out the doubles point with a 6-2 win over Mikhail Belov and Laurence Akwei at #1.
In singles, junior Parker Goldstein (Marietta, Ga.) won 6-0, 6-0 over Alex Slobin at #6 to start the Huskies sweep in singles. Freshman Hank Hill (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) followed with a 6-1 and 6-2 win at #5 over Akwei and Valentin closed out the UConn victory by posting a 6-3, 6-4 win at #4 over Miguel Belfort.
The Huskies followed the same recipe for victory in the afternoon match with Siena. The rookie duo of Hill and Justin Warren (Durham, N.C.) started doubles play with a 6-2 win over Peter Galante and Alexander Reed. Spreyer and Toner gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead with a 6-3 win at #1 over Alessandro Saglia and Diego Lebron.
In singles action, freshman Jack McLister (Leesburg, Va.) got his first collegiate victory by winning at #5 over Peter Galante, 6-1 and 6-1. Warren earned a singles win at #1 to go with his doubles victory, beating Saglia 6-2 and 6-0.
UConn closed it out at #4 as Goldstein defeated Evan Nierman, 6-1 and 6-0. to give the Huskies a clean sweep on the afternoon.
The Huskies close out the regular season on April 9th when they host Villanova on "Senior Day".
