STORRS, Conn. - The UConn men's tennis team posted a 4-3 win over Hofstra University Sunday afternoon from the East Hartford Tennis Club. The Huskies notched their second-straight win and improved to 7-8 on the season.
The Huskies opened Sunday's match by sweeping all three doubles matches. Seniors Christopher Toner (South Hamilton, Mass.) and Arnaud Valentin (Ridgefield, Conn.) both were double winners on Sunday starting with doubles victories at No.1 and No.2.
Toner teamed with classmate Parker Goldstein (Marietta, Ga.) for a 6-2 win at No.1 over Coco Haener and Niko Vulinovich. Valentin and sophomore Hank Hill (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) won at No.2, 6-1. The freshmen team of Jacob Appleton (Farmington, Conn.) and Brady Flanagan (Overland Park, Kans.) finished the sweep at No.3 by beating Nick Silvestri and David Schrott, 6-2.
The Huskies pushed their lead to 3-0 with wins by Valentin and sophomore Jack McLister (Leesburg, Va.) at No.5 and No.6. Valentin defeated Schrott, 6-1 and 6-3 to improve to a team-best 12-9 on the season. McLister won at No.6 over Silvestri, 6-1 and 6-3 as well, his third-straight win.
After a pair of Hostra wins at No.2 and No.3 pulled the Pride to within 3-2, UConn closed out the win at the top spot thanks to Toner. The senior dropped the first set to Marcus Smith, 6-1, but rallied and went on to win 7-5 and 6-4, clinching the match.
The Huskies are home this coming weekend to play host to Boston University and Bryant on Saturday and Sunday.
