QUEENS, N.Y. - The University of Connecticut men's tennis team fell in its BIG EAST season-opening match at St. John's on Thursday. Senior Tom Cook (Pittsford, N.Y.) won the lone three-set match of the day with a victory in sixth singles while the Huskies fell 6-1. Cook now boasts a 5-1 record at No. 6 this spring.
St. John's used the momentum of a 7-0 win over Villanova to start out strong against UConn, sweeping the doubles competition. The Red Storm captured an early lead with three-straight victories in doubles. Cook fell in the third spot with senior Joe Goldstein (Tucson, Ariz.) by an 8-5 margin to Dustin Goldenberg and Martin Kosut.
Goldstein lost his singles match at No. 4 in straight 6-2, 6-2 sets. Sophomore Andrew Marcus (Potomac, Md.) fell in identical 6-1 decisions from the first singles spot.
Sophomore Jai Yoon (Bayside, N.Y.) fell in a second-set tie-breaker to lose his No. 2 singles match. Classmate Dave Adams (Andover, Mass.) was shutout in fifth singles while Scott Warden (Boardman, Ohio) fell in his fourth-singles match, 6-2, 7-6.
