STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut men's tennis team surpassed Fairfield 5-2 on Wednesday led by the solid play of the Huskies' doubles teams. UConn is now 3-6 this spring with a 7-7-1 overall record. Seniors Joe Goldstein (Tucson, Ariz.) and Tom Cook (Pittsford, N.Y.) secured the doubles point with a tiebreaker win at No. 3. It was Goldstein and Cook's fifth win from that spot this spring.
"The play of our doubles teams today was very solid at every position," head coach Glenn Marshall said. "Our seniors, Cook and Goldstein, had a slow start and finished strong in the tiebreaker. Having lost to Fairfield last year, this was a great turnaround."
In addition to the solid showing by Goldstein and Cook, sophomores Dave Adams (Andover, Mass.) and Jai Yoon (Bayside, N.Y.) defeated Rob Ferrante and Ryan Berthod at No. 2 with an 8-2 decision. The final UConn duo, junior Andrew Marcus (Potomac, Md.) and sophomore Scott Warden (Boardman, Ohio), also won their doubles battle from the top spot by default due to injury.
Yoon, Warden, Adams and Cook all translated doubles success to singles wins as each worked for the Connecticut win. Yoon evened his spring record at No. 2 with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Ferrante while Warden captured a 6-0, 6-2 win over Berthod.
Adams took down Mike Lessing in identical 6-1 sets at No. 5 and Cook improved to 6-1 on the year from the sixth spot with a 6-2, 6-2 win.
The Huskies resume BIG EAST action on Saturday with an 11 a.m. match at Georgetown followed by an 11 a.m. match at Villanova on Sunday.
