MANCHESTER, Conn. - The UConn men's tennis team grabbed the doubles point but fell short in singles play, losing to Boston University Sunday afternoon at the Magic Lincer Tennis Academy on "Senior Day". The Huskies honored their lone senior Jonathan Edwards (Isle of Palms, S.C.) after the match.
"The guys came out and played great doubles, being able to take all three doubles matches for the second time this season so it was a fantastic effort," stated associate head coach Reinaldo Valor. "Unfortunately, we couldn't carry that over to the singles and hats off to BU they played a great match and really elevated their level on all the courts."
"We had opportunities to win with three matches out there in the third set or going to the third set with an opportunity to win and that's all we can ask for. Overall, it was a great effort. Obviously on senior day you want to come out with a win, but this was a close second."
The Huskies opened the match with an impressive sweep of all three doubles matches. Edwards and freshman Yili Zheng (Shanghai, China) started the sweep with a 6-1 win at No. 2 over Pete Siozios and Satyajit Simhadri.
Junior Justin Warren (Durham, N.C.) and freshman John Holtmann (Coral Gables, Fla.) clinched the point at No. 1 with a 7-6 (4) win over Pedro Guiterrez and Fabian Soemarno. The junior duo of Hank Hill (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) and Jack McLister (Leesburg, Va.) posted a 7-6 (5) win at No. 3 over Ethan Kolsky and Owen Liu, raising their record together to 17-12 on the season.
In singles, BU took five of the six matches to come away with the win. The Huskies got their lone win at No. 4 from McLister who battled his way to a three-set victory. After dropping the opening set 7-5 to Kolsky, he answered with a 6-4, 6-1 win to earn his 15th win on the season.
UConn will close out the regular season next weekend heading to ECU for a pair of matches. The Huskies will face Richmond on Saturday, April 14 and the host Pirates on Sunday, April 15.
