DALLAS, Texas - The UConn men's tennis team took on ECU in the opening round of the 2018 American Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday morning, falling to the Pirates 4-0 at the Crum Tennis Courts on the campus of SMU. The Huskies see their season come to an end with the loss.
The Pirates clinched the opening doubles point by winning at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. ECU's No. 2 team of Kasey Countee and Ronny Georgi opened with a 6-3 win over UConn's Jonathan Edwards (Isle of Palms, S.C.) and Yili Zheng (Shanghai, China).
At No. 1, Vlad Anghel and Freddie McGeehan gave their team a 1-0 lead by clinching doubles with a 6-4 win over Justin Warren (Durham, N.C.) and John Michael Holtmann (Coral Gables, Fla.).
In singles play, ECU extended their lead at No. 5 with Wisse Jonker beating Holtmann, 6-2 and 6-0. McGeehan won his No. 2 match with UConn junior Hank Hill (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.), 6-4 and 6-1 and Anghel clinched the win for ECU at No. 1, beating Zheng 6-0 and 6-3.
UConn's Warren won the first set in his No. 3 match with Georgi 6-4 and was leading 4-1 in the second before the match was halted. Junior Jack McLister (Leesburg, Va.) lost a tough first set battle with Kasey Countee at No. 4, 7-6 (2) and was leading 3-1 in the second set before his match halted as well.
