UConn Falls 6-1 to Sacred Heart in Men's Tennis

Sept. 24, 2009

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The University of Connecticut men's tennis team lost a difficult 6-1 decision to Sacred Heart on Thursday afternoon. Andrew Marcus (Potomac, Md.) won UConn's lone point of the match at third singles, 7-6, 6-4. Marcus was also successful in doubles, pairing with Dave Adams (Andover, Mass./Andover) to win 8-6 from the No. 3 spot.

Joey Michaels (Rochester Hills, Mich.) and Scott Warden (Boardman, Ohio) each took their singles matches to three sets before succumbing to their Pioneer competitors. Michaels lost the first set 6-4 before returning to take the second by the same margin (6-4). Chris Ujkic prevailed in the final set 10-7 to secure the win for Sacred Heart at No. 2 singles.

Warden lost a challenging three-set match to the Pioneers' Adam Gart. He won the second set 6-2 after losing the first set (7-6). Gart battled to an 11-9 final set score to defeat Warden at No. 5 singles.

"This was a tough battle with a very good team and the score of the match does not indicate how close it really was," head coach Glenn Marshall said. "The difference was us [UConn] losing the doubles point and coming up a bit short in each of our close singles matches. This will make us work a little hard to focus during close matches."

The Huskies host the UConn Invitational this weekend with competition starting on Friday at the University of Connecticut Tennis Courts. The invitational features 12 teams competing in the three day event.
