
STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men’s tennis team opened their season by hosting their annual invitational over the weekend and captured a pair of titles to get the fall started. Senior Jonathan Edwards (Isle of Palms, S.C.) and sophomore Evan Powell (Guilford, Conn.) shared the D Singles Flight crown while the team of juniors Jack McLister (Leesburg, Va.) and Hank Hill (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) won the B Doubles Flight.
McLister and Hill won three matches, capped with a 7-6 (4) win over the team from Boston University to claim the B Doubles crown.
In the D Singles Flight, Powell opened his tournament with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Tom Cimini of Holy Cross. He advanced to the semifinal by beating Quinnipiac’s Bernhard Wright. Powell won the first set 7-5 and led 2-1 before Wright was forced to retire. He beat BU’s Ethan Kolsy in the semi’s in three sets, losing 6-3 in the first but rebounding with a 7-5, 10-6 victory.
On the other side of the D Flight bracket, Edwards had a bye in the opening round then beat QU’s Jackson Koke, 6-0 and 6-2 to get to the semifinals. From there, he advanced on to the finals with a 6-2 and 7-5 win over BU’s J.P. Avila to share the title with Powell.
In the A Singles Flight, sophomore Jacob Appleton (Farmington, Conn.) advanced to the semifinals with a pair of wins. He opened with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Cory Seltman from Sacred Heart and then beat BU’s Satyajit Simhadri, 7-6 and 7-6. He lost there to eventual flight champion Julian Rozenstein of Quinnipiac, 6-1, 7-5.

In the B Singles Flight, freshman John Michael Holtmann (Miami, Fla.) got to the semifinal with a three-set win over QU’s Axel Stern, 3-6, 6-3, 10-8.
The Huskies will play at the Quinnipiac Invitational next weekend.
