Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Playing at the legendary Longwood Cricket Club, the UConn men's tennis team captured a thrilling 7-6 victory over Boston University, lifting the Huskies to 2-0 under new head coach Michael Louis.

Taking advantage of the unique opportunity to play on the grass courts at Longwood, which was opened in 1877, the teams changed the usual format of three doubles and six singles matches to four doubles and nine singles, giving all players the chance to participate.

Deadlocked, 6-6, the match came down to a dynamic singles match between UConn junior Wayne Harrell (East Windsor, Conn.) and BU junior Chanon Varapongsittikul, which lasted almost an hour after the other matches had been completed.

That match came down to the final set, in which Harrell fought back to win the final break point and earn the hard-fought, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 7-5 win to give UConn the final 7-6 edge for the day.

"I want to thank the Longwood Cricket Club and Boston University for hosting us," Louis said. "It's not every day you get the opportunity to play on grass courts, so today was very special for the players. Both teams played with a lot of heart and enthusiasm and it was an exciting match to be a part of. I am very pleased with how our players competed, showing a lot of heart and toughness to earn this win."

Harrell also combined with senior Ryan Carr (Madison, Conn.) to notch a doubles victory for UConn. Other UConn singles wins came from freshman Chris Toner (South Hamilton, Mass.), freshman Parker Goldstein (Marietta, Ga.), sophomore Zac McEntee (Yorba Linda, Calif.), and junior Josh Palmer (Dalton, Pa.). Goldstein came back from a 2-5 deficit in the third set to win via a tiebreaker, leveling the match at 6-6 and setting the stage for the dramatic finale between Harrell and Varapongsittikul.

Besides the Harrell-Carr win, the Huskies' other triumph in doubles came from the combo of Goldstein and sophomore Andrew Ginzberg (Woodbridge, Conn.).

UConn's season continues on Tuesday, when the Huskies host Siena on the UConn tennis courts at 3 p.m.
