Cook Takes Singles Title at Bucknell Men's Tennis Invitational

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior Tom Cook (Pittsford, N.Y.), of the University of Connecticut men's tennis team, won the B Singles Main Draw of the Bucknell Invitational this weekend. Along with doubles partner Ricardo Cardona (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico), Cook took the B Doubles Bracket title in Lewisburg.

Cook earned the B Singles Main Draw title by defeating three Fairleigh Dickinson opponents and an opponent from Bucknell. Cook won a 6-3, 6-0 decision over Mark Hemy from Fairleigh Dickinson in the final match to take the title. After defeating Andrew Denny, 2-6, 6-0, (10-6) and Bucknell's Josh Katten, 4-6, 7-6, (10-8), Cook earned his spot in the finals.

Cook and Cardona won the B Doubles Main Draw with an 8-1 victory over a duo from Colgate in Harry Jewett and Parker Lewis. The Connecticut duo defeated another pair from Colgate, Connor Feuille and Alec Goldstein to earn their spot in the finals after winning an 8-6 decision over Fairleigh Dickinson's Dan Penaranda and Ted Segerfors.

In the same bracket, sophomores Dave Adams (Andover Mass.) and Wei Lin (Bayside, N.Y.) were unable to find the same success. Adams won his first match, 6-3, 6-3, over Colgate's Harry Jewitt only to fall in the quarterfinals (6-4, 1-6, (10-7)) to Bucknell's Kelly Morque. Cardona lost his opening round match to Denny, 6-2, 6-4.

Lin lost in the finals of the C Singles Main Draw, 6-4, 6-1 to Colgate's Alex Goldstein after winning matches over Imran Nayeem (George Mason) and Ted Sergefors (Fairleigh Dickinson).

Sophomore Jai Yoon (Bayside, N.Y.) fell in the quarterfinals of the A Singles Main Draw in the, 2-6, 6-4, (11-9), to Fairleigh Dickinson's Dan Penaranda after surpassing both of his previous opponents in straight sets. Yoon defeated John Nogueras of Colgate, 6-2, 6-2, and followed up with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Jorge Osuna of George Mason.

Also in the A Singles Main Draw, sophomore Scott Warden (Boardman, Ohio) defeated Anton Kovic (Bucknell) in the first round, 6-2, 6-1 while senior Joe Goldstein (Tucson, Ariz.) lost in the opening round. Goldstein dropped a two-set decision, 6-4, 6-2, to Bucknell's Gregg Cohenca.

Sophomore Matt Burns (Middletown, N.Y.) and Lin lost 8-4 to Bucknell's Bogle and Marcil in the opening round of the B Bracket.

UConn doubles teams in the A Doubles Main Draw did not fair well with Yoon and Adams losing in the opening round to a pair from Colgate and Goldstein and Warden losing their first match to a duo from Bucknell.

Men's tennis travels to nearby Hamden, Conn. to compete in the Quinnipiac Invitational this weekend.
