WEST POINT, N.Y. – The UConn men’s tennis team took part in the Army West Point Invite over the weekend, playing a blind dual match format with the host Black Knights, Sacred Heart and Wagner. The Huskies were led by junior Jack McLister (Leesburg, Va.) and freshman newcomer Yili Zheng (Shanghai, China) who each finished 3-0 in singles action over the weekend.
Sophomore Jacob Appleton (Farmington, Conn.) posted a 2-0 singles mark at the event as the Huskies posted 13 total singles wins over Saturday and Sunday. In doubles play, the sophomore-freshman tandem of Brady Flanagan (Overland Park, Kans.) and John Michael Holtmann (Miami, Fla.) posted a pair of wins.
On Saturday, McLister posted wins over Sacred Heart’s Lucca Casalduc, 6-1 and 6-4, and Wagner’s Charlton Boyd, 6-4 and 7-6 (8). Zheng had wins over SHU’s Bryan Einstoss, 6-1 and 6-1, and won in three-sets over Wagner’s Hans Ohrner, 6-3, 3-6 and 10-7. On Sunday, McLister completed his perfect weekend with a three-set battle with Army’s Michael Sienko. He won the first set, 6-3, dropped the second 6-4 and edged out the third set tiebreak, 14-12. Zheng ended his perfect weekend with a three-set win of his own, beating Dylan Simonsen, 7-6, 3-6 and 10-6.
Appleton won his two matches on Saturday, beating SHU’s Cory Seltman, 6-0 and 6-3, and Wagner’s Dylan Walters in three sets, 6-3, 2-6 and 11-9. Against Sacred Heart, Holtmann and junior Hank Hill (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) also earned singles wins. Holtmann won 6-0 and 6-1 over Derek Chapman and Hill beat Anthon Santino, 6-3 and 7-6 (6).
Against Wagner, junior Justin Warren (Durham, N.C.) posted a 6-3, 6-7 (6) and 10-7 win over Anatoliy Lashkul. Senior Jonathan Edwards (Isle of Palms, S.C.) beat Ilya Kneppelhout, 6-3 and 6-1, and sophomore Evan Powell (Guilford, Conn.) beat Allen Wang, 6-3 and 6-3.
In doubles, Flanagan and Holtmann led a three-win sweep for the Huskies over Sacred Heart. The duo won 7-6 (5) over Seiji Hosokawa and Christopher Sause. Appleton and Warren posted a 7-6 (2) win over Seltman and Chapman and Hill teamed with McLister for a 6-3 win over Einstoss and Francisco Del Valle.
Flanagan and Holtmann also beat David Mitchell and Nikita Pereverzin of Army, 7-5.
The Huskies will host a pair of dual matches next Sunday, October 15 when Bentley and SHU visit Storrs.
