HAMDEN, Conn. - Both the University of Connecticut men's and women's tennis teams traveled to take on Quinnipiac on Tuesday and were unable to surpass the Bobcats in a rain delayed match. Quinnipiac narrowly edged the women's tennis team with it down to the sixth singles match before the Huskies fell, 4-3. Men's tennis fell 6-1 to the Bobcats on Tuesday with the lone point coming with freshman Wei Lin (Bayside, N.Y.) earning a three-set victory at No. 6 singles.
Lin defeated Alex Lazerowich 6-3, 2-6, 10-5 in sixth singles to come out the lone UConn victor in a trio of three-set matches against the Bobcats. At No. 1 singles, sophomore Jai Yoon (Bayside, N.Y.) lost to Brian Mikkelson and at No. 4 singles, senior Tom Cook (Pittsford, N.Y) lost his battle with Andrew Weeden.
Cook and senior Joe Goldstein (Tucson, Ariz.) denied Quinnipiac the sweep in doubles action with an 8-1 victory at No. 2 over John Hughes and Weeden. Sophomore Dave Adams (Andover, Mass.) and Yoon fell 8-3 in first singles to James Kwei and Mikkelson. At No. 3 doubles, sophomore Matt Burns (Middletown, N.Y.) and Lin fell, 8-6.
Sophomore Ricardo Cardona (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico), Goldstein and Adams all lost their singles matches in straight sets to their respective Quinnipiac opponents.
Women's tennis gained an early advantage with the doubles points, thanks to wins at second and third doubles. Junior Emily Herb (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and freshman Lauren Wilmarth (Andover, Mass.) defeated Adrienne Markison and Sarah Viebrock at No. 2 doubles, 8-3. Junior Katie Moritz (York, Pa.) and freshman Abby McKeon (Westford, Mass.) won an 8-2 decision at No. 3 doubles over Lisanne Steinert and Natalie Duckor.
Seniors Kelley LoRusso (Shoreham, N.Y.) and Alison Campitiello (Staten Island, N.Y.) fell to Mary Wilson and Rachel Cantor in first singles, 8-4.
The Bobcats won singles matches one through three, with LoRusso, Herb and Campitiello all losing in straight sets. Wilmarth won at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-4 over Steinert and sophomore Alexa Gregory (State College, Pa.) defeated Duckor in fifth singles, 6-4, 6-1. Wilmarth and Gregory's victories tied the match at 3-3 while McKeon battled with Viebrock at No. 6 singles.
McKeon won the second set to tie the three-set match only to fall in the final and lose 7-5, 1-6, 7-6. Quinnipiac won the match 4-3.
The women's tennis team hosts Sacred Heart on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the University of Connecticut Tennis Courts. The men's tennis fall season continues at the ITA Regionals at Dartmouth Oct. 15-18.
