STORRS, Conn. - The UConn men's and women's tennis programs traveled to Hamden and defeated in-state rival Quinnipiac in a pair of dual matches. The women won, 4-3, while the men took the match by a score of 5-2. The UConn men swept the doubles competitions, going 3-0.
"It was a great win for the UConn Tennis teams today. Both squads were fired up and played great doubles matches to clinch each of the doubles points," said Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall.
"The men's singles was very strong at the top of the lineup, with great leadership by our captain, Scott Warden, at the No. 1 position. The Ladies singles was strong with wins by senior captain Alexa Gregory, and sophomores Lucy Nutting and Marie Gargiulo," added Marshall.
The UConn women split singles action but earned a 2-1 result in the doubles tandems to earn the point towards the team score.
The No. 1 team of Jennifer Learmonth and Maxene Weinberg opened with an 8-4 result. No. 2 combination of Alexa Gregory and Marie Gargiulo fell, 8-5. The No. 3 tandem of Lucy Nutting and Abby McKeon gave Connecticut the important 2-1 edge in doubles with an 8-3 result.
In singles action the two teams alternated wins throughout. Learmonth fell at No. 1. 7-6, (7-5), 6-0 but Gregory responded at No. 2 with a come-from behind result; 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Weinberg dropped her match at No. 3, 6-1, 6-2. Nutting turned around and gave the Huskies a positive result at No. 4 with 6-3, 7-5. Wilmarth fell at No. 5 but Gargiulo took her match easily, 6-1, 6-0 to give the Huskies the team victory.
On the men's side, Connecticut won all three doubles matches, including two close ones, to earn the point. The top tandem of Scott Warden and Jacob Spreyer broke serve early in the match and never looked back, 8-5. UConn's No. 2 team of Jai Yoon and Teddy Margules looked to close out the competition on serve at 7-5 but took the hard route, breaking serve to win 8-6. Wei Lin and Peter Surovic took an 8-2 result at No. 3.
The Huskies won straight through No. 4 singles, led by Warden at No. 1, 6-3, 6-4. Yoon took the first point for UConn at No. 3 singles coming from down 3-0 in the second set to earn the win 7-6 (4), 6-3. Spreyer earned a hard fought result at No. 2 to clinch the team victory, going 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
Lin had similar results at No. 4, going 7-6 (2), 6-4, to earn the result. Ryan Carr dropped No. 5 singles, 6-4, 4-6 (10-8). Surovic also dropped his singles match at No. 6 by scores of 6-2, 6-3.
The Huskies will end the fall season with the Connecticut Championships at Yale beginning on October 28. The women close out the fall schedule at the Regional Championships at Yale beginning on October 21. Men's - UCONN defeats QU: 5-2
