Doubles' Success at Connecticut State Championships

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Two UConn doubles' pairs have played their way into the quarterfinals of the Connecticut State Championship this weekend hosted by Yale University in New Haven, Conn.

Freshmen Teddy Margules and Ryan Carr defeated Quinnipiac's James Kwei and Alex Lazerowich 8-6 to advance to the round of 16, where they faced Yale's Kyle Dawson and Ryan Berman. The UConn duo downed the Bulldogs' pair in a 8-5 match to advance into Saturday's quarterfinal round. On Saturday, Margules and Carr will take on Fairfield's Erik Kremheller and Joe Michalisin.

The UConn duo of Andrew Marcus and Scott Warden have also battled into the quarterfinals after wins over Hartford's Edgardo Ureta and Fil Miletic as well as Fairfield's Dennis Zlobinsky and Robert Ferrante. The Huskies defeated Hartford by a dominating 8-1 before downing the Fairfield pair 8-2. Marcus and Warden will face Yale's Erik Blumenkranz and Jordan Abergel on Saturday in quarterfinal action.

In singles' competition, Marcus earned his way into quarterfinal play on Sunday after defeating Kremheller 6-4, 3-6, 10-6. He will face Yale's Joel Samaha on Saturday.

Wei Lin won his first match of the championships with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Joel de los Santos from Hartford. Lin then fell to Fairfield's Dan Sauter 5-7, 6-1, 10-3. Warden also won his first singles' match with a dominating 6-1, 6-3 win over Sacred Heart's Jake Miller. Warden's victory came before losing to Quinnipiac's Andrew Weeden in a close 4-6, 7-5, 10-8 match-up.

Ricardo Cardona defeated Hartford's Marco Neves 6-2, 4-6, 10-6 in his first match before he fell to Yale's Jordan Abergel in a pair of 6-4 sets.



Competition will continue on Saturday and Sunday.
