NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The UConn men's tennis team opened up play at the Connecticut State Championship tournament on Friday at Yale University with four Huskies and a pair of doubles teams advancing in their respective flights.

"I was really impressed with our singles and doubles play today," commented Associate Head Coach Reinaldo Valor.  "Our guys are really starting to elevate their games and we are starting to consistently perform at a high leve every match."

In the singles draw, senior Jonathan Edwards (Isle of Palms, S.C.), juniors Hank Hill (Ponte Vedra Beach, FLa.) and Jack McLister (Leesburg, Va.), and freshman John Michael Holtmann (Miami, Fla.) all moved on with wins on Friday.

Edwards defeated Quinnipiac's Hielke Moore in three sets, 6-3, 4-6 and 1-0.  In the same bracket, Hill took down Sacred Heart's Cory Seltman, 7-5 and 6-4.  McLister also beat a member of Sacred Heart in Bryan Einstoss, 6-0 and 6-4.  Holtman was a 6-4, 6-0 winner over Fairfield's Dylan Appel.

In doubles play, the duo of Hill and McLister had a big day on Friday, notching a pair of wins to move to the semifinals of their draw.  They opened with a 6-2 win over Marist's Paulo Siracusa and Carlos Moreno and then took down the Yale duo of Dennis Wang and Alan Sou, 6-3.

Edwards and Holtman won their first match of the day, beating Quinnipiac's Wright and Curran, 6-1.  They came up short in the next round, falling to SHU's Seltman and Hosokawa, 6-4.

Play continues on Saturday and Sunday at Yale University.
