STORRS, Conn. (Feb. 18, 2009) – The University of Connecticut’s Andrew Marcus (Potomac, Md.) was named the BIG EAST Men’s Tennis Player of the Week. Marcus opened the spring season with a 2-0 singles record and a doubles win in matches at Lehigh and against Mt. St. Mary’s last weekend.
Marcus made the move to No. 2 singles to start the year and dominated both of his opponents, winning a pair of two set battles in each match. He first won a 6-2, 6-3 decision over the Mountain Hawks’ Collin Laffey to help the Huskies collect their first victory of the 2009 season. In doubles, he paired with Scott Warden (Boardman, Ohio) to win an 8-6 battle at No. 2.
In the second match of the day, Marcus allowed Mt. St. Mary’s Patrick Plastow to win just two games in the 6-2, 6-0 victory.
UConn won both matches to start the season with a 2-0 record for the first time since the 2005 season. Competition resumes for the Huskies when they travel to West Point, N.Y. for a pair of matches this weekend. On Feb. 20, UConn will compete against its second Patriot League team of the season in Army and follow with a match against Stonybrook on Feb. 21.
