WEST POINT, N.Y. (Feb. 20, 2009) – The University of Connecticut men’s tennis team secured the doubles point with wins at first and second en route to the Huskies' first victory over Army in program history. The Huskies won the 5-2 match at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center on Friday evening.
Joe Goldstein (Tucson, Ariz.) and Ben Schueler (Arlington, Mass.) combined for their second-straight victory at No. 1 doubles this season. Goldstein and Schueler earned the 9-7 win against the Black Knights. Following their lead at No. 2, Andrew Marcus (Potomac, Md.) and Scott Warden (Boardman, Ohio) continued to find success. The Connecticut duo earned the doubles point with an 8-6 decision.
Army took the first and final singles matches of the evening over Goldstein and Tom Cook (Pittsford, N.Y.), respectively. Goldstein lost to the Army team captain, 6-1, 6-2 while Cook fell in a three-set battle in sixth. Cook took the first set (6-3) before falling in the final two, 6-2, 6-1.
It took Dave Adams (Andover, Mass.) three sets to win his match at fourth singles. Adams lost his first set to Army before prevailing in the final two. Scott Warden (Boardman, Ohio) won his match at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-4.
Joey Michaels (Rochester Mills, Mich.) and Marcus both won their battles in two sets. Marcus continued to find success from second spot with a pair of 7-6 decision in each set to win. Michaels soundly defeated Donald Van Velzer in the first set (6-1) before strongly a bit in the final to win it 7-6.
"It was a wonderful win," head coach Glenn Marshall said. "A tremendous win for the program with an outstanding effort from all of our players."
The Huskies continue the season in West Point, N.Y. with a match against Stony Brook on Saturday.
