ORLANDO, Fla. (March 10, 2009) – In its second day in competition on spring break, the University of Connecticut men’s tennis team won 6-1 against Monmouth on Tuesday. Last season, UConn won a close 4-3 match to the Hawks during the spring season.
The Huskies won the doubles point with victories at first and third. Joe Goldstein (Tucson, Ariz.) and Ben Schueler (Arlington, Mass.) once again came away victors at No. 1 with an 8-5 decision. From the third spot, Joey Michaels (Rochester Hills, Mich.) and Tom Cook (Pittsford, N.Y.) won 8-2 over their Monmouth competition.
At No. 1 singles, the Hawks won their lone point of the match with Benjamin Evenden winning in two-sets (6-2, 6-0) against Goldstein. Andrew Marcus (Potomac, Md.) won his first set 6-3, before shutting out his opponent in the final to win.
Michaels earned a tiebreaker victory in the first set before cruising to a 6-2 victory in the second set. Scott Warden (Boardman, Ohio) won his battle at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-2. In the fifth singles match, Dave Adams (Andover, Mass.) won in two sets as did Cook in the final singles match.
“The team was fired up today for this match,” head coach Glenn Marshall said. “The boys showed how well they are playing this spring season.”
The Huskies are now 5-2 this spring and 9-3 overall after posting a 4-1 fall record. UConn will take on another Northeast Conference opponent in Robert Morris on Thursday at 8 a.m.
