STORRS, Conn. (Sept. 18, 2008) - In its second home match of the season, the University of Connecticut’s men’s tennis team won 7-0 against Hartford on Wednesday.
The Huskies earned the doubles point with Joe Goldstein (Tucson, Ariz.) and Ben Schueler (Arlington, Mass.) winning 8-2 at No. 1. Joey Michaels (Rochester Hills, Mich.) and Scott Warden (Boardman, Ohio) claimed their second-consecutive win at second singles with an 8-4 decision. Tom Cook (Pittsford, N.Y.) and Dave Adams (Andover, Mass.) won their match 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.
Goldstein won in two 6-4 sets over Hartford’s Ricky Dove at No. 1 singles while Michaels took the 6-3, 6-3 victory at second singles. Schueler cruised to a 6-1 win in the first set of his battle with the Hawks’ Rich Lieberman before securing the No. 3 singles victory in the second set, 7-5.
Cook and Ricardo Cardona (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) rounded out the singles’ competition at the University of Connecticut Tennis Courts with wins at the fifth and sixth spots.
"We have had a longstanding rivalry with Hartford going back to when I played at UConn in the late 80's," head coach Glenn Marshall said. "It is nice to score a solid victory against an in-state Division I school. The team played extremely well and has a lot of confidence going into our tournament this weekend at Brown University"
The men’s tennis team (2-0) continues the season this weekend at the Brown Invitational on Sept. 19-21.
