STORRS, Conn. - The UConn men's tennis team will open play in the American Athletic Conference Championship tournament on Thursday morning when they face-off with the Temple Owls from the Michael D. Case Tennis Center from the campus of the University of Tulsa.
The Huskies have struggled this spring and are 0-2 against the AAC this season including a 6-1 loss at Temple back on March 28th. UConn enters the tournament as the No. 9 seed and face the No. 8 seeded Owls. The winner of Thursday's match-up will move on to a quarterfinal match-up with the the No. 1 seeded USF Bulls.
USF is one of five teams in The American ranked in the weekly ITA national rankings, coming in at No. 19 in the country. They are joined by tournament host Tulsa, Tulane, SMU and Memphis.
On the court, the UConn doubles tandem of senior Jacob Spreyer (Denver, Colo.) and sophomore Christopher Toner (South Hamilton, Mass.) have played in the top-spot all season and enter the tournament with a team-best 13-15 record. Freshman Jonathan Edwards (Isle of Palms, S.C.) has put together an impressive rookie season and is second on the team collecting 10 doubles victories this year, playing with both senior Joshua Palmer (Dalton, Pa.) and sophomore Parker Goldstein (Marietta, Ga.).
Edwards leads the team in singles victories, finishing the year 15-19 overall while playing in the No. 3 through No. 6 positions. Toner has played both No. 2 and No. 3 singles for the Huskies and posted 10 victories this season. Junior Zac McEntee (Yorba Linda, Calif.) is second on the club with 12 singles wins this year.
