STORRS, Conn. - The 2010 BIG EAST Men's Tennis Championship will have a similar feel for the University of Connecticut men's tennis team on Thursday. As the Huskies are not only the No. 8 seed again, they are set to face Villanova for the second-consecutive season on the first day of the championships. Last season, UConn lost both its meetings with the Wildcats and won the lone regular season meeting between the two this spring.
UConn and Villanova will play at 9 a.m. at Leeper Park Tennis Center in South Bend, Ind. as Notre Dame hosts the championships. The Fighting Irish are seeded-second in the tournament and are set to play No. 7 Georgetown on 9 a.m. on Friday.
The winner of the Huskies and Wildcats match will face top-seeded Louisville at 9 a.m. on Friday as well. That match will be played on the South Courts at Leeper.
Seniors Joe Goldstein (Tucson, Ariz.) and Tom Cook (Pittsford, N.Y.) lead an experience group of Huskies back to the Championship as five of the six singles players return with 2009 BIG EAST Championship experience. Junior Andrew Marcus (Potomac, Md.), sophomores Dave Adams (Andover, Mass.) and Scott Warden (Boardman, Ohio) are included in that mix of returnees.
Marcus brings a 7-5 record from the No. 1 singles spot to South Bend, Ind. while Cook has been nearly unbeatable in the sixth spot. Cook is 7-2 at No. 6 this spring. Warden is 7-3 from the third spot this spring and classmate Adams is 6-4 from the fifth spot.
Newcomer and sophomore Jai Yoon (Bayside, N.Y.) has been a valuable element of the Huskies lineup this spring and is all even (5-5) at No. 2 singles while Goldstein has seen time at third, fourth and sixth throughout the spring.
This is the third-consecutive season that the Huskies have started their bid for a BIG EAST Championship title against the Wildcats. Marcus, Yoon, Warden and Adams all won their respective singles matches in the 2010 regular-season meeting. Yoon and Adams combined for the lone doubles victory for the Huskies at No. 2.
