STORRS, Conn. - Four University of Connecticut athletic programs are among the Division I sports teams being recognized for top academic performance as part of the NCAA's academic reform program.
Based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rates, the UConn men's golf, women's soccer and men's and women's tennis programs have earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards. These awards are given each year to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their APRs.
"I congratulate our men's golf, women's soccer and men's and women's tennis teams on being selected for Public Recognition Awards," said UConn Director of Athletics Jeffrey A. Hathaway. "Each program has distinguished itself within its respective sport and is representing our University proudly. Head coaches Dave Pezzino in golf, Len Tsantiris in women's soccer and Glenn Marshall in men's and women's tennis and their student-athletes should each be commended for this outstanding recognition. I also want to acknowledge Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes Director Bruce Cohen and his staff for their ongoing and dedicated efforts in support of our academic mission."
The recognition is the fifth-straight for men's golf, which has been honored each year since the NCAA started this program in 2006. The recognition is the second in a row for the women's tennis program.
A total of 841 Division I sports teams have earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for their exceptional work in the classroom based on the most recent APR data. The BIG EAST Conference was third among all leagues for the number of teams honored with 70.
Complete APR scores for all Division I sports teams will be released later this spring.
"Most Division I student-athletes and teams take seriously their dual responsibilities in the classroom and on the court or field of play, but every year there is a special category of teams that perform exceptionally well and deserve this noteworthy recognition," NCAA Interim President Jim Isch said.
The APR provides a real-time view of a team's academic success by tracking the progress of each student-athlete during the school year. By measuring eligibility and retention each semester or quarter, the APR provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.
