STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men’s tennis team will open their fall schedule this weekend hosting their annual fall tournament on the UConn Tennis Courts on campus. The Huskies will welcome Bentley, Boston University, Holy Cross, Merrimack, Quinnipiac and Sacred Heart to campus for the three-day tournament.
The Huskies are under the direction of new associate head coach Reinaldo Valor this season and return seven players from last season’s line-up. UConn’s lone senior this season is Jonathan Edwards (Isle of Palms, S.C.) who was 8-2 last season in singles play. In dual matches he finished unbeaten at 5-0.
The junior tandem of Hank Hill (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.) and Justin Warren (Durham, N.C.) both return after both posting double digit wins in singles play last season. Hill was 11-9 on the singles court, playing at the No. 4 through 6 spots. Warren finished 13-15 overall in singles play, posting six wins during the fall tournament schedule. His highlight last fall was sharing the B Flight singles title with teammate Arnaud Valentin at the Connecticut State Championship. He entered the spring season last year ranked by the ITA in singles.
Hill and Warren were the Huskies’ best doubles team last year, finishing 9-8 overall, playing the majority of the season at No.2.
Junior Jack McLister (Leesburg, Va.) posted nine wins last year and finished the season strong, going 6-2 over the final two months of the season, including winning three-straight capped by a victory over ECU in the American Athletic Conference Tournament. McLister and sophomore Brady Flanagan (Overland Park, Kans.) were 6-2 as a doubles team. Flanagan finished the year 11-8 overall in doubles play.
Sophomore Jacob Appleton (Farmington, Conn.) posted nine singles wins and nine doubles wins during his rookie campaign. Classmate Evan Powell (Guilford, Conn.) also returns. UConn has a pair of freshmen on this year’s team in John Micael Holtmann (Miami, Fla.) and Yili Zheng (Shanghai, China).
The Huskies will be at the Quinnipiac Invitational (Sept. 22-24), the Army Invitational (Oct. 6-8), the ITA Regional Championship (Oct. 18-22) and the Connecticut State Championship (Oct. 27-29) to round out the fall tournaments. The Huskies will host a pair of dual matches against Sacred Heart and Bentley on September 30.
