STORRS, Conn. (Sept. 26, 2008) – The UConn Invitational moved indoors to the East Hartford and Manchester Racquet Club on Friday with over 12 teams competing, including the University of Connecticut men’s tennis team.
In the A flight of doubles competition, Joe Goldstein (Tucson, Ariz./Catalina Foothills) and Andrew Marcus (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchil) won two of their three doubles matches on the first day of the invitational. The Husky pair defeated doubles partners from Bryant 8-4 and followed with an 8-5 victory over Tim Sichler and William Kring from Boston University. Quinnipiac’s James Kwei and Garrett Lane ended the winning streak for Goldstein and Marcus defeating Goldstein and Marcus 8-5.
Ben Schueler (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) and Joey Michaels (Rochester Hills, Mich./Stony Creek) moved the consolation bracket after an early round lost to Fairfield’s Dan Sauter and Chip Palumbo, 8-6. The UConn duo rebounded with an 8-3 victory over Hartford in the A flight of consolation bracket.
Two UConn pairs advanced in the B doubles flight with Tom Cook (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) and Scott Warden (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) shutting out Hartford to win 8-0. The Husky pair went on to defeat Sacred Heart’s Cole Conrad and Kirill Kasyanova 8-4 in the following match. Adams and Burns won an 8-2 match over their Bryant counterparts. They were unable to maintain the momentum losing to a pair from Stony Brook in the next match 8-2.
Semi final doubles play begins at 10:30 a.m. followed by the singles portion of the invitational. Play will conclude on Saturday due to limited court space at both the East Hartford and Manchester Racquet Clubs.
