STORRS, Conn.- A pair of three set victories in singles proved to be the deciding factor in the University of Connecticut men's tennis team 5-2 win against Bryant on Wednesday afternoon. The Huskies hosted the Bulldogs in their final home match of the fall season.
Goldstein lost the opening set 7-5 to Cristian Balestrieri before taking the second 6-4 and the final 7-5. In second singles, Jose Rodriguez claimed a 6-2 win in the first set before Michaels came back with 6-3 and 7-5 scores in the final two sets to win.
Andrew Marcus (Potomac Md.) claimed a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Thomas Nowak at No. 3 singles. Scott Warden (Boardman, Ohio) won his fourth singles match by identical set scores of 6-4, 6-4. Dave Adams (Andover, Mass.) also earned the victory at No. 6 singles with matching 6-3, 6-3 scores.
In doubles, Bryant claimed two of the three matches to win the doubles point. The Husky pair of Marcus and Warden won their match at No. 2, 8-3. The Bulldogs claimed their second point of the match with a 6-3, 6-2 decision at fourth singles.
"This was a great win today," head coach Glenn Marshall said. "It easily could have gone either way, but our singles players were outstanding. Michaels and Goldstein were the last two matches out on the court today and they both came through in a big way."
Although this afternoon's match concludes UConn men's tennis home events for the fall, the season continues this weekend (Oct. 10-12) as the Huskies compete in the Quinnipiac Invitational.
