HAMDEN, Conn. (Oct. 12, 2008) – Two doubles pairs from the University of Connecticut men’s tennis team won the A and B brackets of the Quinnipiac Invitational on Sunday. Scott Warden (Boardman, Ohio) won the C singles flight with four victories during the competition.
Joe Goldstein (Tucson, Ariz.) and Ben Schueler (Arlington, Mass.) won the A doubles flight championship over a duo from Fairfield, 8-4. Goldstein and Schueler started with a 9-8 victory over Bucknell’s double team Ryan Sandburg and Anton Kovic. The UConn doubles pair won their next match by the same score, this time defeating a duo from Sacred Heart.
In the B doubles flight, Matt Burns (Middletown, N.Y.) and Dave Adams (Andover, Mass.) defeated Thomas Curran and Joseph Nuara from Quinnipiac to complete the Husky sweep with a 9-7 victory in the final match. Burns and Adams won three matches to earn their spot in the finals.
Warden won four matches in the C singles bracket to earn the championship title. He defeated his Bucknell opponent (6-3, 6-1) in the opening round and went on to win matches against Zach Tuckman (7-5, 6-1) and Chad Sullo (6-2, 6-0) to earn a spot in the final match.
Warden dropped the first set to Charlie Feldman 7-5, but recovered to take the final two 6-4, 10-3 and win the championship title.
Adams also competed in the C bracket, losing his first match to Bucknell’s Daniel Bednarek 6-7, 6-3, 10-6.
In the D singles bracket, Burns found success early with a three-set victory over Alessio Gallarotti of Boston University. Burns recovered from a 6-2 loss in the first set to win the second (6-3) and third (10-5). He recorded a pair of two-set victories en route to a spot in the final match. Burns lost the final 6-4, 6-2 to Bucknell’s Greg Maxsom.
Two UConn singles players competed in the A singles bracket with Joey Michaels (Rochester Hills, Mich.) falling in his first match to Quinnipiac’s Brian Mikkelson. Goldstein earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over Kevin Gardner from Bryant in the first match. He then suffered a 6-2, 7-6 loss to Ryan Sandburg.
Andrew Marcus (Potomac, Md.) and Schueler were both eliminated in the first round of competition in the B singles bracket. Marcus took the first set 6-2 against Dan Sauter, but dropped the next two 6-4, 10-8. Sacred Heart’s Nick Mazzarese took the two-set decision (6-3, 6-3) from Schueler
UConn returns to action at the ITA Regional Championships in nearby New Haven, Conn. hosted by Yale. The ITA Regional Championships take place Oct. 17-19.
