UConn Tennis Volunteers with After School Program at Verplank

STORRS, Conn. (Dec. 3, 2008) – The University of Connecticut men's and women’s tennis team once again volunteered at the Verplank Elementary school in Manchester on Dec. 3. The  team made a return trip to the local school after spending time there on Nov. 5.

The Huskies plan school activities for the children and play educational games with the students. Tennis also got the kids moving with some outdoor activities last week. Some of the UConn student-athletes help kids with their homework while others are part of a reading group, helping the students of Verplank become Reading Millionaires.

Together with the UConn athletic department and Ms. Luce, the Language Arts and Literacy Coordinator for Manchester Public Schools, Verplank has challenged its students to read 1,000,000 minutes.

As of Nov. 24, the students of Verplank Elementary School have read 130,000 minutes and the UConn women’s tennis team is eager to help them reach their goal.
