Selwyn Maxwell takes first place in 60m hurdles with personal best time

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The UConn men’s track and field team competed for the third straight day as the Huskies claimed first place at the Great Dane Classic at the Armory Track. UConn finished with 126.50 points as the host Albany took second with 82 points.

Sophomore Selwyn Maxwell (Monroe, N.Y.) set a new personal best in the 60 meter hurdles as he crossed the finish line first in a time of 7.96, while junior Claudio DelliCarpini (West Harrison, N.Y.) grabbed second in 8.16 to add a total of 18 points to Connecticut’s final tally.

UConn had three Huskies earn points in the 60 meter dash as senior Jesse Drinks (Ossinging, N.Y.) finished fourth (6.87), junior Darnell Cummings (Millbrook, N.Y.) took fifth (6.91) and senior Kevin Smith (Harwinton, Conn.) finish eighth (6.93).

The Huskies added another first place title on the evening as the DMR squad of James Agati (Valley Stream, N.Y.), Alex Bennatan (Lake Forest, Ill.), Joe Clark (West Islip, N.Y.) and Alex Levine (Danbury, Conn.) ended the race in 9:59.06.

Junior sprinter Kyle Twombly (Penfield, N.Y.) took fifth in the 400 meter dash in a time of 48.99, while senior Chris Whyte (Rahway, N.J.) grabbed sixth in the 500 meter dash in 1:05.00.

Levine notched his first collegiate first place as he was the first to cross the finish line in the 800 meter run in a time of 1:54.10, while junior Paul DeSalvo (Plymouth, Minn.) was third (1:55.68) and Bennatan finished sixth (1:56.27).

Freshman Alvaro Chavez (West Windsor, N.J.) recorded a top-five finish with a time of 2:29.32 in the 1,000 meter run for fifth place, while sophomore Bryan Fowler (Tolland, Conn.) took third in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 8:21.73.

On the field, senior Noel James (Whitman, Mass.) finished third in the high jump posting a leap of 2.04m (6-08.25) and sophomore Tobey Belton (Westminster, Mass.) took sixth (1.94m, 6-04.25). Freshman Harley Lacroix (Elkins Park, Pa.) finished fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 14.34m.

Connecticut had two Huskies record top-five jumps in the pole vault as junior Cory Duggan (Staten Island, N.Y.) was third (4.95m, 16-02.75) to match his personal best and senior Matt Alexander (Tolland, Conn.) finished fifth (4.80m, 15-09.00).

In the throwing events, junior Eric Masington (Trevose, Pa.) took third with a toss of 16.15m (53-00.00) in the shot put and senior Josh Faboyede (Providence, R.I.) registered a hurl of 18.83m (61-09.50) for second. Faboyede set a new personal best with this performance.

The Huskies are back in action next Saturday at Boston University’s Terrier Classic where events are slated to begin at 10:45 a.m.
