BOSTON, Mass. – The University of Connecticut men’s track and field team concluded the Terrier Classic on Saturday in Boston with solid results. The team received several top-ten finishes in a well-rounded effort by the squad.

Two Huskies posted top-ten finishes in the 400m dash with Kyle Twombly grabbing fifth place in a time of 47.78 seconds and Chinedu Amonu earning a close seventh in 47.91. UConn also placed another pair in the top-10 in the 800 meter run. Alvaro Chavez earned the bronze in a time of 1:51.30 and Robert Rhodes posted a time of 1:52.37 good for seventh place.

In his season premiere, senior captain Darnell Cummings led all Huskies in the 200 M dash with a sixth place finish in a time of 21.55.

Connecticut performed well in the field events, with Eric Masington taking home fifth place in the shot put thanks to a 17.29M (56-08.75) heave.  Once again the Husky pole vaulters impressed with four top-ten finishes. Cory Duggan led the way in second place, clearing 5.00M (16-04.75). Rookie Craig Hunter grabbed the bronze with a 4.90M (16-00.75) effort.  Timothy Murphy took home a fifth place finish 4.90M (16-00.75) and Connor Grunwald rounded out the UConn effort with a vault of 4.70M (15-05.00) to earn seventh.

“I'd have to say we came away with what we were looking for at Terrier,” said head coach Greg Roy. “Great job in the 200, 400, 500 and 800 on the Track and a limited field team looked good in the Vault and Shot Put. Our captains led the way with Eric Masington in the Shot, Cory Duggan in the Pole Vault and Darnell Cummings in the 200. All really led by example.”

The meet provides a benchmark going forward with the season. “We showed a lot of development in a high level competition,” offered Coach Roy. “While there were a lot of top performances, it also highlighted areas of concern moving forward towards the first ever AAC Championships.”

“The next two weeks will show a lot about the character of this team as next weekend we face our perennial New England rival, Rhode Island in Kingston,” coach Roy projected. “The following weekend arguably the top 4 teams in the east in UConn, Penn State, Cornell and Princeton square off in State College, PA. This is the part of the season where one thing becomes clear:  Competitors Compete!”

The Huskies return to action on Feb. 1 at the Coaches Tribute Invitational in Kingston, R.I.
