BOSTON – The UConn men’s track and field team jumped out to an early lead in the New England Championships at the Reggie Lewis Track and Field Center. The Huskies 76.33 point total after five events on Friday leads the 14-team event with Northeastern following behind in second with 24 points.
The Huskies dominated the 5000 M Run with five Huskies grabbing the top seven spots and securing 29 points for UConn. Patrick Begley seized first place with a time of 14:20.22 and teammate Kyle Brackman took second place. Michael McGonnigle (4th), Ian Mickool (5th) and Aidan Fiol (7th) rounded out the point scorers for the Huskies.
The Huskies continued their strong opening day with four pole vaulters receiving points for UConn. Junior Ian Bergere (4.95M) and freshman Marc Deluca (4.85M) snagged second and third, respectively, and teammates Samuel Rusak (5th) and Chandler Ives (T8th) finished inside the top-10.
Malik Snead highlighted the long jump event with a first place finish and scored a mark of 7.55 M. Sophomore Jordan Torney followed suit with 7.20 M jump that earned him fourth place.
In the weight throw event, Sebastian Castano scored a 17.68 M toss that landed the junior in fifth place and scored four points for UConn.
In the 200 M Dash preliminaries, captain Trent Beram paced the field with a first place ranking and qualified for the final with a time of 21.64 seconds. Freshman Tyler Gleen qualified for the 800 M Run final with a third place finish (1:54.93) in the preliminaries.
The Huskies close out the New England Championships tomorrow beginning at 10 a.m.
