ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Sophomore track & field athlete Alvaro Chavez (West Windsor, N.J.) concluded an excellent sophomore indoor campaign as a Second Team All-American in the 800m run at the 2014 NCAA Track & Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. on Friday.
Chavez placed ninth overall with a time of 1:50.83, narrowly missing the qualification for Saturday’s final but taking home Second Team All-American honors in the process. Earlier this season Chavez shattered his personal best in the 800m at the Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup in February. The sophomore posted what was then the third-best time in the country to qualify for the NCAA Championship. He entered the inaugural American Athletic Conference Championship sporting the top time in the league for the 800m.
“AJ competed well in his first NCAA Championship, finishing 9th and missing the final by four one hundredths of a second (.04). While it sounds trite, it was a learning experience. He’s kicking himself for not being in the final, but comes away knowing he’s got a great career ahead of him.”
Chavez and the Huskies look ahead to the 2014 Outdoor Track & Field Season, which opens on March 29 at Connecticut’s home track meet, the UConn Invite.
