ORLANDO, Fla. – The UConn men’s track and field team opened the 2013 outdoor season with 11 top-five finishes at the UCF Invitational. The Huskies carried their success over from the indoor season and were led by a strong senior class on Friday and Saturday at the UCF Track and Soccer Complex.
The Huskies tallied two top-five finishes in the 1,500 meter run as senior twin captains Alex and Tim Bennatan finished second (3:57.13) and third (4:00.12), respectively. Alex topped his previous personal best of 3:57.13.
In the 110 meter hurdles, Jesse Chapman took fourth in 15.49 and Sam Smith placed fifth following a 16.29 time. Chris Whyte claimed second in the 400 meter hurdles after crossing the finish line in 54.56.
Senior Joe Clark took second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:38.37.
On the field, senior Josh Faboyede notched a top-five finish in the opening outdoor meet of the season as he finished fifth in the hammer throw with a hurl of 54.10 meters. Meanwhile, Cory Duggan took fourth in the pole vault with a leap of 4.80 meters.
The Huskies continued to find success in the field events with sophomore Amanze Williams capturing first place in the triple jump with a distance of 14.02 meters and senior Eric Masington taking second in the shot put with a toss of 15.82 meters.
Masington led a group of five Huskies in the discus as he grabbed his second silver of the meet with a toss of 53.03 meters. Josh Faboyede followed him in ninth with a toss of 43.12m.
Connecticut is back in action when they host the UConn Spring Invite on Saturday at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex. The Storrs meet is slated to begin at noon.
