PHILADELPHIA, Pa.- University of Connecticut men’s track and field concluded the three-day prestigious Penn Relays on Saturday as the team captured two top-five performances and posted an overall successful trip to Philadelphia.
Junior Eric Masington (Trevose, Pa.) registered UConn’s lone top-five individual performance at the Penn Relays with a fifth place finish in the college shot put with a toss of 16.59m (54-5.25). Masington also added a 12th place (52.76m) finish in the college discus to his weekend resume.
In the relays, Connecticut’s top-five finish came from Selwyn Maxwell (Monroe, N.Y.) , Jesse Drinks (Ossinging, N.Y.), Kevin Smith (Harwinton, Conn.) and Robert Hovanec (Gillette, N.J.) in the 4x100m IC4A when the team finished fifth in 41.50. The same team also competed in the college 4x100 meter relay and took 19th in 41.38.
Connecticut saw two Huskies record top-ten performances in Saturday’s hammer throw with Chris Ackell (Brookfield, Conn.) and Josh Faboyede (Providence, R.I.) claiming sixth (57.12m) and seventh (56.42m) place, respectively.
Senior Chris Whyte (Rahway, N.J.) was the only Husky to compete in an individual track event at the prestigious meet as he crossed the finish line in 53.64 in the 400 meter hurdles championship.
The UConn relay squads saw plenty of action over three-day meet with the DMR (James Agati, Hovanec, Phil Caldwell, Joe Clark) claiming 11th in the Distance Medley relay Championship of America with a time of 9:53.80.
In the final relay of the meet for the Huskies the 4x800 team (Alvaro Chavez, Robert Rhodes, Tim Bennatan and Alex Bennatan) finished ninth in 7:27.83.
Several members of the squad will compete on Sunday at the Yale Invite before the team begins championship season next week at the BIG EAST Championships.
