TAMPA, Fla. – The Huskies men’s track and field squad concluded the 2012 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships in fourth place with 83 points, just three points behind third place Pittsburgh. Notre Dame dethroned Connecticut, the 2011 champs, with 153 points and USF claimed the silver with 100 points.
For the fourth consecutive year a Husky claimed ownership of the decathlon title as Jake Waruch (Kerhonkson, N.Y.) won the event with 7,230 points. He was joined on the podium by his brother Ben Waruch (Kerhonkson, N.Y.) who captured second place (6,944 points), while junior Sam Smith (Slingerlands, N.Y.) was fourth and senior Kyle Rowbotham (Scotch Plains, N.J.) finished sixth.
Also bringing home a gold medal in the 2012 Outdoor BIG EAST Championships was junior Noel James (Whitman, Mass.) who was first in the high jump.
On Sunday afternoon, sophomore Cory Duggan (Staten Island, N.Y.) reached the podium in the pole vault with a leap of 4.95m (16-02.75) for third place. Sophomore Darnell Cummings (Millbrook, N.Y.) also podiumed crossing the finish line second (10.38) in the 100m dash, while junior Jesse Drinks (Ossinging, N.Y.) was right behind him for sixth place (10.47).
The Huskies notched five points towards their total following the discus where junior Josh Faboyede (Providence, R.I.) finished sixth (49.65m) and senior Mike Alleman (Scotch Plains, N.J.) took seventh (49.32m).
The Huskies’ 4x100m relay squad (Kevin Steinberg, Kevin Smith, Cummings, Drinks) finished the race in second place after posting a time of 40.47. In the 4x400m relay the UConn squad (Tyler Hopson, Kyle Twombly, K. Smith, Chris Whyte) crossed the finish line fourth in 3:18.30.
Freshman Selwyn Maxwell (Monroe, N.Y.) concluded the 110m hurdles fourth (14.08) place to give the Huskies four points.
Connecticut will continue the 2012 championship season next weekend at the IC4A Championships in Princeton, N.J. The meet will begin on Friday, May 11 and end on Sunday, May 13.
