JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- The Huskies concluded the first day of the 2012 Outdoor NCAA Championships First Round on Thursday night at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla. Connecticut had three athletes compete on the opening day and despite posting impressive performances none were able to move on past Thursday’s events. The top 12 of each event will advance to the Championships in Des Moines, Iowa on June 6.
Senior Eric Alfiere (Beacon Falls, Conn.) finished 32nd in UConn’s first event of the 2012 Outdoor NCAA Championships First Round as he hurled the javelin 59.79 meters (196-2). Alfiere will not move on to Iowa as only the top 12 throws reach the next level.
The Huskies had two athletes compete in the 100m dash on Thursday evening with junior Jesse Drinks (Ossinging, N.Y.) leading the way with a time of 10.67 to take the 34th seat, while sophomore Darnell Cummings (Millbrook, N.Y.) was 40th after crossing the finish line in 10.74.
UConn will continue the First Round on Friday with field events beginning at 10 a.m. and track events starting at 5 p.m.
