UConn's 400M Relay Sets New School Record At NCAA First Round

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of Connecticut men’s track and field team finished the First Round of the 2012 Outdoor NCAA Championships at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla. on Saturday night. The Huskies will only have one athlete competing in the finals in Des Moines, Iowa with Jake Waruch looking to grab an All-America title in the decathlon.

UConn saw three of its top athletes compete on the field on Saturday with senior Kyle Duggan (Staten Island, N.Y.) kicking things off in the pole vault as he concluded the afternoon in 37th with a leap of 5.02m (16-5 1/2). Junior Noel James (Whitman, Mass.) placed 37th in the high jump after posting a jump of 2.07m (6-9 1/2) and senior Mike Alleman (Scotch Plains, N.J.) fouled out of the shot put.

On the track, sophomore Claudio DelliCarpini (West Harrison, N.Y.) ran in the 110m hurdles quarterfinals and finished 19th in 14.08.

The Husky 4x100m relay squad of Kevin Steinberg (Langhorne, Pa.), Kevin Smith (Harwinton, Conn.), Jesse Drinks (Ossinging, N.Y.) and Darnell Cummings (Millbrook, N.Y.) concluded the race in 15th place with a new school record of 40.27.

Waruch will begin competition at the Drake Stadium on Wednesday, June 6 at noon with the last decathlon event starting on Thursday, June 7 at 7:50 p.m.
