EUGENE, Ore.- Jesse Chapman concluded day one of the decathlon at the NCAA Championships on Wednesday at Oregon’s Hayward Field. The East Thetford, Vt. native finished the opening day in 22nd place with 3,504 points after five events.
Chapman opened the day crossing the finish line in 11.59 in the 100m dash followed by a leap of 6.61 meters in the long jump. The junior’s best finish of the day came in the shot put where he finished fourth overall with a toss of 14.41 meters. In the last events of the day Chapman posted a leap of 1.84 meters in the high jump and ran the 400m in 54.16.
Chapman will finish the decathlon on Thursday when he competes in the 110 meter hurdles at 11 a.m. followed by the discus, pole vault and javelin. The final event of the decathlon will be the 1,500 meter run which will begin at 7 p.m. PMT.
