STORRS, Conn. – UConn sophomore Alvaro Chavez (West Windsor, N.J.) will represent the University at the 2014 NCAA Indoor Championships this weekend in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Chavez posted a time of 1:47.96 at the Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup on Feb. 8 to qualify for the event, which will be held March 14-15. Click here to view a complete list of participants.
The preliminary heats for the 800 meter run are scheduled for Friday, March 14. The event will feature two heats with the top three runners and the next two fastest athletes advancing to Saturday’s final. Chavez, whose time marked the fastest in the American Athletic Conference, is scheduled to run in the first heat on Friday.
“Representation at the NCAA is reserved for an elite few,” University of Connecticut men’s track & field head coach Greg Roy explained. “16 athletes per event qualify, and to make the cut, much less to score, is a great boon to the reputation of the program. We have a rich history in the 800 meter, with probably 10-12 All-Americans in the last decade or so in that event alone.”
ESPN3 will stream the meet live on March 14 starting at 7:55 p.m. Eastern and March 15 starting at 7:50 p.m. Eastern. A tape delay of the championship will air Saturday, March 22 starting at 6:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPNU. A watch link to ESPN3 has been posted above.
