STORRS, Conn.- The University of Connecticut’s men’s track and field team will open its 2013 outdoor season this Friday, March 22nd at the 2013 UCF Invitational in Orlando, Fla. The event will span two days, with the first event taking place at 1:00 pm on Friday, before the Invitational comes to a close late Saturday afternoon.
It will mark the 2nd time in the past three seasons that the Huskies have opened their outdoor season away from Storrs. Last season, UConn kicked off its season with the Husky Spring Invitational at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex, during which the Huskies recorded 19 top-five finishes.
The Huskies are coming off an extremely successful indoor season, in which they claimed three championships in the BIG EAST, New England, and IC4A. Most recently, the Huskies placed first at the IC4A Championships with 104 points. It marked the second time in program history that UConn has won the IC4A Championship and also is just the second time in school history that the Huskies have captured all three Championships.
At the IC4As, senior Alex Bennatan took first place in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:49.45. Teammates Selwyn Maxwell and Claudio DelliCarpini took 2nd and 7th place, respectively in the 60 meter hurdles, with Maxwell posting a time of 7.88 and DelliCarpini following at 8.02. The 4x800 relay team, made up of Phil Caldwell, Nick O’Leary, Paul DeSalvo, and Tim Bennatan, also finished first with a time of 7:27.66
The Huskies will be looking towards newly named senior captains Alex Bennatan, Tim Bennatan, Jesse Drinks, Ben Waruch, Jake Waruch and Cody Unger to provide them leadership for the upcoming season. UConn did not name captains for the indoor season; instead it relied on the 17 4th and 5th year athletes to set the example for the underclassmen.
UConn will host its first home event the following week on March 30, 2013 when the team will compete in the UConn Spring Invite.
