Chapman And Walsh Finish Day One Of Husky Spring Invite Decathlon

    STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut men's track and field team opened the 2011 Husky Spring Invite this afternoon, as Jesse Chapman and Sean Walsh competed in day one of the decathlon. Chapman ended day one in fourth place, while Walsh finished in sixth.

    "Jesse and Sean were both really solid during competition today," assistant coach Rich Miller said. "We are using this meet to measure where they are, and so far I am pleased with what they have shown."

    Chapman, who finished with 3,384 points after day one, had his best showing in the shot put. Chapman won the event with a throw of 12.87m, while also placing third in the long jump (6.54m) and the high jump (1.87m).

    Walsh finished with 3,093 points on the day, winning the 400m dash in a time of 51.70. Walsh's other top finish of the day came in the shot put in which he finished sixth with a distance of 10.55m.

    The duo will complete the decathlon tomorrow (April 8) with the 110 meter high hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500 meter run. Tomorrow's events will now begin at 12:00 noon at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex.
