STORRS, Conn. -
University of Connecticut senior Paul DeSalvo (Plymouth, Minn.) of the men's track and field team was named as the inaugural winner of The Don Ruck Community Service Award by The UConn Club. The award was presented on Monday night at the group's 61st Annual Awards Dinner on Monday night.
This award will be given annually and honor a UConn varsity student-athlete who, beyond their intercollegiate athletics involvement, has displayed extraordinary commitment to a community service activity or significant leadership in a student-based volunteer group activity.
The specific traits of leadership and volunteerism were a hallmark of proud UConn alum Don Ruck '52, the guiding spirit and founder of The UConn Club.
DeSalvo is actively engaged in a number of on-campus organizations, most notably serving as president of the Finance Society, a group which gives back to students who are passionate about the field of study.
He is a member of the Husky Reach program, which has weekly visits to local schools to develop interest in both academics and athletics. DeSalvo has also been a tutor and study hall proctor for members of the men's track and field teams, in addition to other student-athletes. In addition, DeSalvo represents his team on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
DeSalvo acts as the Investment Manager and Treasurer of the Student Managed Fun at UConn. He heads a ten-member student team selected to oversee the investment of one million dollars of University funds in the stock market.
He has earned a spot on the Dean's List in six of seven semesters as a Husky and has not missed a semester on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in ever semester since fall 2010. DeSalvo has been honored on the Big East All-Academic Team in each of his three seasons thus far.
In the summer of 2013, DeSalvo completed an internship with the Latin American Debt Capital markets at Citigroup.
On the track, DeSalvo captured an IC4A Championship in 2013 as a member of the 4x800 meter relay team and placed fifth at the 2013 New England Championship as an individual in the 500-meter run.
A native of Plymouth, Minn., DeSalvo is a finance major with a minor in Spanish.
