Men's Track Squad Places Third At Big East Outdoor Championship William Thomas finishes first in decathalon.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Freshman Christian Mazza (Toms River, NJ) captured the pole vault Sunday with a leap of 16'4.75" and the University of Connecticut finished third in a field of 14 teams at the 2001 BIG EAST Conference Menâs Outdoor Track and Field Championship. UConn totaled 88 points in the three-day competition for its third place showing. Georgetown won the team title with 155 points while Villanova was second with 112 points.
Mazza's victory in the pole vault was one of three first place finishes for the Huskies. On Saturday, freshman William Thomas (Wakefield, RI) won the decathlon and junior Corey Pusey (Vernon, CT) won the shot put.
Thomas totaled 7,303 points in winning the decathlon. Thomas took the lead in the decathlon's third event, the shot put, and led for the remainder of the 10-event competition. UConn made it a one-two finish in the decathlon as junior Mike Boney (East Haven, CT) was second with a score of 6,831 points.
In the shot put, Connecticut maintained its dominance of the event as Pusey placed first with a throw of 56'2". It was the fourth consecutive year that a UConn athlete had won the shot put. Connecticut's Ray Wilks was a three-time shot put victor from 1998-2000.
Other point scorers for the Huskies included: freshman Chris Charles (Park Ridge, NJ) placed third and junior Laban Marsh (Erie, PA) was sixth in the 100 meter dash, sophomore Joe Mendel (Wayne Hills, NJ) placed third in the 400 meter dash, freshman James Tremblay (Albany, NY) was third in the 800 meter run, freshman Paul Pisno (Toms River, NJ) was third in the javelin, freshman John Barth (Wakefield, RI) was third in the hammer throw while Pusey was seventh and junior Jeremy Rice (Old Saybrook, CT) was eighth, sophomore Raffael Craig (Woodbine, NJ) was fifth in the high jump, Ken Goglas (Randolph, NJ) was seventh in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, and the 4x100 relay team of Marsh, Mendel, Charles and sophomore Ricky Gross (Nanuet, NY) placed second.
