STORRS, Conn.- The University of Connecticut men's track and field team will have nine athletes in individual events and a relay squad competing in this weekend's NCAA Outdoor Championships First Round. The Huskies will travel to Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla. with events beginning on Thursday, May 24 and concluding on Saturday, May 26. The top 12 of each event will advance to the Championships in Des Moines, Iowa on June 6.
Sophomore Darnell Cummings (Millbrook, N.Y.) will lead UConn into competition as he is competing in two individual events and also as a member of the Husky 4x100m relay group. Cummings first event will be the 100m, where he is ranked 34th, on Thursday followed by the 200m dash, ranked 46, on Friday.
"Darnell quietly has become the best sprinter in the history of the program, only .01 off the 100m record held by teammate Jesse Drinks. Cummings is also the No. 2 200m runner in the history of the program and a member of the school record 4 x 100," stated Head Coach Greg Roy.
Joining Cummings on Thursday in the 100m dash will be junior Jesse Drinks (Ossinging, N.Y.) who is a seat above his teammate in 33rd place. Both Cummings and Drinks will be joined by senior Kevin Steinberg (Langhorne, Pa.) and senior Kevin Smith (Harwinton, Conn.) in the 4x100m relay on Saturday. The Husky relay group recently broke UConn's all-time mark and brought home silver medals at the IC4A and BIG EAST Championships.
UConn is sending two to Florida to race in the 110m hurdles as underclassmen Claudio DelliCarpini (West Harrison, N.Y.) and Selwyn Maxwell (Monroe, N.Y.) are ranked 26th and 32nd, respectively.
The Huskies, who concluded the 2012 outdoor season second in the Northeast Region, will be well represented in the throwing events as they have three athletes competing in three separate events. Senior captain Mike Alleman (Scotch Plains, N.J.) will throw in shot put from the 32nd seat on Saturday, junior Josh Faboyede (Providence, R.I.) will attempt to reach the Championships in the hammer (ranked 24th) and senior Eric Alfiere (Beacon Falls, Conn.) is ranked 36th in the javelin and will compete on Friday.
Also representing Connecticut in the field events will be senior captain Kyle Duggan (Staten Island, N.Y.) and junior Noel James (Whitman, Mass.). Duggan will look to stamp his ticket to Des Moines, Idaho on Saturday in the pole vault, while BIG EAST Champion James (ranked 25th) competes in Saturday's high jump.
Junior captain Jake Waruch (Kerhonkson, N.Y.) has already confirmed his trip to Des Moines to compete in the finals of the decathlon as he finished the season ranked 17th.
