Huskies Finish Day One at NCAA Championships

SACRAMENTO, CA (June 11) - Five members of the University of Connecticut men’s track & field team traveled to Sacramento, Calif. to compete in the finals of the NCAA Track & Field Competition hosted by California State University, Sacramento from June 11-14.

Three UConn athletes competed in the first day of competition. Will Thomas (Wakefield, RI), a decathlete completed five events on Wednesday, finishing the day with 4100 points. Thomas earned a first place finish in the shot put with a season-best distance of 15.45 meters (50-8.25) to tally 817 points. He cleared a height of 2.05 meters (6-8.75) in the high jump, also a season-best mark, to tie for second in the event. After one day of competition, Thomas is in second place, trailing Stephen Harris from Tennessee, who's scored 4229 points.  The men finish the multi-event competition on Thursday with the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 meter run.

Paul Pisano (Toms River, NJ) competed in the javelin, finishing sixth in the preliminaries with a throw of 70.55 meters (231-5.00), a season best, to advance to the finals on Friday. Joel Legare (Holden, MA), who advanced to competition in Sacramento with a "wild card" entry in the 800-meter finished in 18th place in the preliminaries with a time of 1:50.27. Legare did not advance to the semifinal round.

Competing along with Thomas on Thursday will be Joe Mendel (Wayne, NJ) in the 400-meter dash and Mike Deibler (Monroe, NY) in the high jump.
