SACRAMENTO, CA (June 12) - Will Thomas (Wakefield, RI) of the University of Connecticut mens track and field team placed second in the decathlon at the NCAA Track & Field Championships hosted by California State University, Sacramento from June 11-14.
Thomas tied for first place in the pole vault, clearing a height of 5.00 meters (16-4.75), a team-best in the 2003 season, to earn 910 points. He also captured fifth in the discus throw with a distance of 42.12 meters (138-2.00). He threw the javelin a season-best 54.09 meters (177-5.00) and also recorded a season-best in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:36.56. Thomas earned his second place finish and second All-America title with a career-high 7894 points over the two-day competition.
Joe Mendel (Wayne, NJ) placed 13th in the preliminary round of the 400-meter dash with a time of 46.11 seconds to advance to the semifinal round on Friday.
High jumper Mike Deibler (Monroe, NY) qualified for the finals on Saturday, clearing a height of 2.14 meters (7-0.25). Deibler tied for 10th place as nine competitors cleared a top height of 2.18 meters (7-1.25).
