LIMA, Peru -
UConn rising sophomore Eric Van Der Els (Norwalk, Conn.) won the 1,500-meter run at the Pan American Junior Championships on Sunday in a championship record time of 3:43.16. He topped the previous record of 3:45.72 set by Mike Woods of the United States in 2005.

Van Der Els advanced to Sunday’s final by finishing second in his heat on Friday in a time of 3:52.19. In the final, Van Der Els topped Kyle Madden of Canada, who finished second in 3:44.19, while Cooper Yeare of the United States was third in 3:46.46.
UConn was also represented at the Pan American Junior Championships by rising sophomore Cameron Thompson (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.), who finished fourth in the hammer throw on Friday with a mark of 66.84 meters.
