AMHERST, Mass. - The UConn men's cross country team is set to open the 2015 season on Saturday, Sept. 12 when it heads to Amherst, Mass. to participate in the Minutemen Invitational.
The 6K race, which is being hosted by UMass, will begin at 12 p.m. and includes competition from Amherst, Maine, Boston College and Vermont. Results will be available shortly after the conclusion of the race at TFRRS.org.
The squad last competed at the annual event in 2013, claiming first place with 63 points and averaging a time of 19:41.73. Michael O'Donnell crossed the finish line in 19:22.90 and took second place overall in his first collegiate meet.
"As a Conference Mile Champion, O'Donnell provides a Captain that can point to his accomplishments and say "do that", said Roy. "A great competitor, Mike brings talent and a positive outlook on life that spills over to everything he does. Wyatt is the kind of gritty, hard-nosed kid who has exemplified our program over the years. Forced to tryout for the team as a sophomore, he not only made the team but made a great contribution to the conference track championship, finishing fifth in the steeplechase."
The Huskies' 17-man roster includes six freshman and a pair of All-Conference selections (Michael McGonnigle, Michael O'Donnell). The program welcomed Kyle Barber(Fayetteville, N.Y.), Kyle Brackman (Berkeley Heights, N.J.), PJ Garmon (Billerica, Mass.), Chris Heydrick (Elliot City, Md.), Connor Holm (Rosemont, Pa.), and Matt Russo (Westfield, N.J.) to the Storrs Campus for the start of the 2015-16 academic year.
