STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut men's cross country team will be running in their second meet of the season when they head up Route 91 to Amherst for the UMass Invitational, Saturday. The race will kick off at 11:00 a.m.
The Huskies are coming off of a second place performance at the Fairfield Invitational last Saturday, September 12. The top finishers for the Huskies were junior Scott Johnson who finished second overall and Nick Aguila who took fourth place.
The whole team did not compete at Fairfield and this weekend all but two will be running in Amherst. Cross Country coach Rich Miller is "looking for progress among the runners. This meet will be a good test to see where the team is at as they will be competing against some of the top programs in the northeast, including No. 8 ranked UMass."
There are a lot of new names this season on the cross country team. Veteran Will Sanders will take over captain duties for the 2009 season. As a whole, the team is a young group equipped with six freshmen but there are high aspirations for the squad to develop throughout the season and career. The track team is at a point where there is an opportunity to evolve the cross country portion of the program in the months and years ahead.
