PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Three days after turning in an impressive performance at the 2016 New England Championships at Franklin Park, UConn men’s cross country standout Mike O’Donnell was selected as the American Athletic Conference Male Athlete of the Week, as announced by the league on Tuesday afternoon.
O’Donnell was the Huskies’ top finisher over the weekend, taking seventh-place overall in the 8K event in Boston with a time of 24:54.6 seconds. As a team, Connecticut averaged a 25:41 second finish in the 8K race, placing three individuals into the top-60.
“Mike is not only an outstanding athlete, he is a great leader, both as a captain and as an officer in SAAC,” said UConn head coach Greg Roy. “Our aspirations in cross country start with Mike’s competitive leadership.”
O’Donnell, who also held captain responsibilities a season ago, was the program’s top finisher at the 2015 American championship in Greenville, N.C. last November, crossing the finish line in sixth overall.
UConn faces a quick turnaround when it heads to Kingston, R.I. to participate in the Rothenburg Run on Oct. 14. A complete meet preview will be available on uconnhuskies.com on Thursday.
