BRONX, N.Y. - After placing fourth in the American Championships on Oct. 29, the men’s cross country team returns to action on Friday, Nov. 11 for the NCAA Cross Country Northeast Regional at Van Cortland Park in Bronx, N.Y. The race is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
Senior Mike O’Donnell (Methuen, Mass.) earned All-Conference honors with his sixth overall finish at The American Championships (24:29.1). Head coach Greg Roy believes that O’Donnell could take the next step at this week’s meet.
“Captain Mike O’Donnell has a solid chance at qualifying for us,” said Roy. “I don’t think he has run his best race yet and with a solid run could move himself into good position.”
Co-captain Michael McGonnigle has been a consistent performer for the Huskies this season, winning the Rothenberg Run on Oct. 14. McGonnigle placed in the top-25 in the conference meet.
The Huskies got a quality performance from Kyle Brackman (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) in the conference meet with the sophomore placing in the top-25 (25:31.2).
“As a team we have to run out of our skulls to qualify with the defending national champs, Syracuse and Iona at the top and Providence a solid chance to grab the at-large,” said Roy. “Our team has top-10 aspirations and we hope to place three scorers in the top 50 and our other runners in the top 100,” said Roy.
The NCAA Division 1 National Championships will be held on Saturday, November 19 at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, Ind.
Results and a full recap of the Northeast Regional will be posted on uconnhuskies.com on Friday.
